What kind of books does Compass Press publish?
We publish tales of fiction in many different genres, with a strong focus on fantasy, paranormal, science fiction, and young adult. In the interest of being earth conscious, Compass Press is a POD (print on demand) publisher that releases both hardback (on rare occasions), paperback printed versions, and of course eBooks.
When will Compass Press be accepting submissions?
The time we will open for submissions is yet to be determined, but we plan on opening some time in the fall of 2012. When we do open, it will be for both agented and unagented submissions. Look for an exciting contest coming soon where the winner will get a contract with Compass Press!
Do you offer advances?
We do not. Instead of paying advances, Compass Press offers their authors a much higher royalty rate than is normal for the industry, on both printed versions and eBooks.
Do you currently offer any services to authors?
We do not, as that is a vanity press trait and Compass Press is not a vanity press. However, our cover designer, CP Design, is available as a freelance graphic designer if you need a cover or promotional materials designed. This service is separate from Compass Press and will not in any way affect your submission to Compass Press.
On the About Us page is says you are a POD publisher. What does that mean?
POD is short for Print On Demand. Publishing is changing and we plan to be the change we want to see in the world. POD means your book is not printed until it is ordered. That means nothing is ordered in that isn't sold so there is no waste. You can still order through a bookstore but most bookstores won't stock POD books on hand.
Are there any expenses on my part?
Absolutely not. Compass Press handles every aspect of the publishing process from cover design to editing and distribution.
